CARCAJOU BAY

A relatively short paddle across Grand Lake brings you to Carcajou Bay. Surrounded by picturesque rocky hills and beautiful waterfalls along its south shore, Carcajou Bay is a scenic destination. Upon entering the bay, note the faded Indigenous pictographs discernible on the small rock bluffs along the north shore. Splash water on the rocks to help bring them back to life! A perfect spot to swim under the waterfalls to cool off on a hot summer’s day.

UPPER & LOWER SPECTACLE LAKES

Both Upper and Lower Spectacle Lake are easily accessed from Carcajou Bay. To the right of the waterfalls, note the portage over to Carcajou Creek. From the creek, keep right to reach Upper and Lower Spectacle Lakes. Although similar in size, Upper Spectacle is the largest and deepest of the two. Each lake has two campsites; brook trout can be found in both lakes.

HIGH FALLS

High Falls is an attraction well worth taking the time to visit. It’s accessible at the northern tip of Stratton Lake and is a popular bathing spot for those wishing to take an exhilarating ride down a natural rock slide — safely situated a short distance from the High Falls waterfall. Paddle to the northern end of Stratton Lake, securely tie off your canoe and hike along the footpaths. Follow the sounds of rushing water until you reach the cascades and waterfalls. Let nature take you away!

This site is also accessed by foot along the High Falls Cheater Trail and Eastern Pines Backpacking Trail.

HIGH FALLS CHEATER TRAIL

This 10.4km return trail offers an alternative day route to the highly popular High Falls. Watch for the marked parking lot at KM 33, just west of Brigham Lake. From the trailhead, hike through mixed pine, oak and poplar forests until you hear the sounds of rushing water. Subject to flooding in the springtime.

Each year we camp with canoe/kayak or hike in the east side of Algonquin Park. Running the river rapids is also a favourite activity. Often our group will stop a the Algonquin Portage Store to rent equipment, pick up supplies or arrange car shuttles. The staff are friendly and want you to enjoy your experience in the Park and surrounding Ottawa Valley. The service is top notch!
