Grand Lake & Achray
About The Destination
Achray Campground
Beautiful sandy beaches with car camping accessibility make the Achray campground a very popular destination. The Eastern Pines Hiking Trail begins here and offers an alternative land route to High Falls a beautiful waterfall with an exhilarating rock slide.
Visit the historic Outside-In Cabin and the original site of Tom Thompson’s The Jack Pine painting.
Open mid-May to late October.
Grand Lake
This stunning lake is well worth exploring! From Achray, paddle north to various interior campsites along the shoreline that offer extra privacy from the flow of canoeists heading towards Stratton Lake and the Barron Canyon. The northern tip of Grand Lake features a cattail marsh where Great Blue Herons and American Bitterns gather to stalk frogs and rest.
Grand Lake is also the put-in point for canoe trippers paddling to the Barron Canyon on two- or three-day trips. Paddle from Grand Lake to Stratton Lake, and then over to St Andrews Lake, portaging through to Opalescent Lake at the head of the Barron River. Continue paddling through the stunning Barron Canyon and finish your trip at Squirrel Rapids where parking is available.
Booking a car shuttle is recommended for those traveling with only one car.
Eastern Pines & Berm Lake Trails
This multi-day hiking trail system comprises the Berm Lake Loop (4.6km) and two Eastern Pines Loops (6km and 14.8km).
This exhilarating trail system winds its way through old growth pine forests and scenic lookouts, and offers overnight campsites designated solely for backpackers. The trailhead departs the Achray campground, and terminates at High Falls a collection of rushing pools, rock slides and waterfalls.
